Description
This painting is based on the original photograph 'Dark-eyed Junco - Snow Bird', by Cindy Treger, whose express consent has been requested to use it as a reference.
The dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) is a species of the juncos, a genus of small grayish American sparrows. Juncos vary across the country (see Regional Differences), but in general, they’re dark gray or brown birds brightened up by a pink bill and white outer feathers. The Dark-eyed Junco Cismontanus (or Cassiar) usually differ from the ordinary Slate-colored: it has a more blackish hood contrasting with the back, and the males are quite darker than the female.
Some know it as the colloquial name, snowbird as it tends to be a backyard bird for many during winter, mainly in the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in and then retreat northward each spring. Their foraging style is to feed on the ground, largely on seeds in the winter
As a curiosity, "junco" is the Spanish word for "rush". Another curiosity is that, in winter, they typically form flocks and often associate with other species, including chipping sparrows, pine and palm warblers, and bluebirds.

Angeles, beautiful artwork. I don't have as many of these juncos this year. I saw four robins today, that means spring is on its way. f/l

These birds are especially cute, if the weather there matches ours, maybe it's too cold for them!! Thank you so much, dear Cindy, hope the Spring will be showing there soon!! :))
